What we offer on a school trip
School Visits to Selly Manor:
Today, these houses are packed with objects from the past that bring history to life and help to show what life was like hundreds of years ago.
With the help of our experienced and engaging Education Team, as well as a whole host of hands-on activities, a visit to Selly Manor is a great way to explore and learn about the past in a fun and enjoyable way. Linked to the National Curriculum, our tours and activities are regularly reviewed in line with teacher feedback, and we have received a prestigious Sandford Award for Education.
Timings:
Please see the information above for the specific timing for each type of visit. If schools wish to stay at the museum after 2pm, we are happy for you to carry out teacher-led activities. Please mention this when booking.
What makes us a great choice for education
Selly Manor Museum is the site of two historic buildings: Selly Manor - a Tudor House - and Minworth Greaves - a Medieval Hall.
Our trips allow children to explore these historic sites, see real historic objects, and take part in interactive activities.
What is typically included on our school trips
Outlined below are details of a typical Selly Manor visit. However, we are happy to tailor-make visits to suit the topic that is being studied or the age of the children. To discuss this further, please contact us on 0121 472 0199 or email sellymanor@bvt.org.uk.
The Great Fire of London - Key Stage 1
Join us for an interactive storytelling session, looking at why the fire started and how it was put out. The children will take part in interactive storytelling, outlining the key figures, learning about the timber-framed houses to understand how the fire spread so quickly, and handling replica objects.
The guided tour of the manor will investigate the life and times of people living in 1666, including the social conditions, the clothing, daily life and work, the timber buildings, the food and cooking, and crime and punishment.
This session supports a number of Key Stage 1 National Curriculum elements, including a history topic beyond living memory.
Duration: 10am - 2pm
Cost: £8.00 per child
The Tudors - Key Stage 2
Discover what life was like at Selly Manor 450 years ago. A typical Tudor visit to the manor includes a fully guided tour with a member of our Education Team. Students will investigate Tudor life and times including the social conditions, the clothing, the Kings and Queens, the rich and poor, daily life and work, the timber buildings, the food and cooking, crime, punishment, and war.
Children will be able to experience what life would have been like by exploring a real Tudor house, handling replica historical objects, playing Tudor games, and dressing up.
Duration: 10am - 2pm
Cost: £8.00 per child
This session supports a number of Key Stage 1 & 2 National Curriculum elements, including a history topic beyond living memory, a study of history or a site from a period beyond 1066, and a study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends a pupil's knowledge beyond 1066.
