Teach Wild delivers outdoor learning workshops directly in your school grounds or local green space for EYFS, KS1 and KS2. By combining literature, nature and hands-on activities, our outdoor learning workshops offer students a unique and memorable way to connect with stories and the environment around them.

Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert - EYFS & KS1 (Autumn term)

Go on a windy adventure with Leaf Man heading East past the chickens, flying over the ducks and geese. Can we feel the wind outdoors? Watch the leaves falling from the sky. Will they go far? Create Leaf Man or a leaf creature from the story. This one hour workshop can either be extended to two hours by adding additional activities linked to Leaf Man or two classes can have the workshop in a half day session.

Stick Man by Julia Donaldson - EYFS & KS1

Come along with Stick Man on an outdoor, action packed, sensory adventure. Starting at the family tree, we work our way through the story using props and our bodies to bring the text to life using phrases from the book. Create Stick Man or a family member to take home. This one hour workshop can either be extended to two hours by adding additional activities linked to Stick Man or two classes can have the workshop in a half day session.

The Gruffalo & The Gruffalo’s Child by Julia Donaldson - EYFS & KS1

Step outside as mouse scuttling in the woods, trying to avoid the dangerous predators in the forest. Working our way through the story, we use props and our bodies to bring the text to life using phrases from the book. Or become the Gruffalo’s child feeling brave in the wind and snow looking for the Gruffalo. Using clay and natural materials, create a Gruffalo character to take home. This one hour workshop can either be extended to two hours by adding additional activities linked to The Gruffalo or two classes can have the workshop in a half day session.

One Snowy Night by Nick Butterworth - EYFS & KS1

Percy the Park Keeper loves looking after his animal friends but they are lost in the playground and it’s cold outside! Go on a trail to find his friends and help them warm up with some hot chocolate. Along the way, help hedgehog to hibernate, become squirrels and discuss suitable homes for the characters. This one hour workshop can either be extended to two hours by adding additional activities linked to Percy the Park Keeper stories or two classes can have the workshop in a half day session.

Stig of the Dump by Clive King OR Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura - KS1 & KS2

Be Stig or Om for the day and bring the Stone Age topic to life! Use a flint & steel and have a go at making a spark or lighting some tinder, make some cordage (string), create charcoal paint for cave drawings, make Stone Age jewellery or create an axe. Just some of the activities on offer for this fun, action packed outdoor learning workshop. Finish sitting around a fire reflecting on Stone Age life drinking nettle tea. This outdoor workshop could be booked for a half or full day depending on the amount of activities you would like to try.

Floodland by Marcus Sedgwick - KS2

You have suddenly been stranded on Eels Island, having battled the elements to leave Norwich on your boat which is no longer in use as it crashed against the rocks. It is winter and a storm is brewing so you need to act quickly as a team in order to survive. What do you need for survival? What is the most important survival need? What equipment do you have available? Look at a map of Eels Island (your outdoor space) and explore for resources. A thrilling outdoor workshop where communication, teamwork and resourcefulness are just some of the skills at play!

Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo - KS2

You are Michael and have just been washed up on a desert island. You are hot and thirsty! Working in groups think what you would need in order to survive. Search for some shelter building materials and explore what else you can find on the island. Reflect on how Michael may have felt on his own. A fun, action packed workshop where communication, teamwork and resourcefulness are just some of the skills at play!

Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver - KS2

A rich text full of reference to the natural world. Look at your leaf and find others who have the same. Which is your tree? Examine trees in the environment and ID them to become a clan e.g. Birch clan. Create a mini camp together in your clans using natural materials and explore the area to find other resources you may need in order to survive. Reflect together at the end on how easy if would have been for Torak doing all of this by himself. An immersive outdoor workshop where communication, teamwork and resourcefulness are just some of the skills at play!

Primary Science

We have created numerous immersive outdoor learning workshops linked to the National Curriculum and below are some of the examples we have linking to primary science. Taking science outdoors helps to nurture children’s curiosity and gives them an opportunity for interactive experiences to help develop their knowledge and understanding. We use our outdoor activities as a context to develop their scientific enquiry skills whilst promoting awe and wonder of the world.

Birds - Find Your Flock - EYFS & KS1

Become tweeting birds locating your flock, create nests and find food to feed your hungry chicks whilst avoiding the magpies. Phew! An exciting outdoor workshop using games and natural materials to explain the life of birds and how they interconnect. This one hour workshop is suitable for EYFS and KS1. It can either be extended to the Birds of a Feather workshop below or two classes can have this workshop in a half day session.

Birds - Birds of a Feather - EYFS & KS1

In addition to the Find your Flock workshop above, use binoculars to look for birds in your local area and ID them using bird spotter sheets. Become songbirds hiding your nests from the corvids, using language birds use to stay safe. This is a half day workshop.

Busy Bees (Spring/Summer term) - EYFS, KS1 or KS2

EYFS & KS1

Look for signs of Spring or Summer in your outdoor space and learn how to communicate like bees. Create bees using natural materials, using them to see how they pollinate plants.

This one hour workshop can either be extended to two hours by adding additional activities or two classes can have the workshop in a half day session.

KS1 & KS2

Look for signs of Spring or Summer in your outdoor space. Discuss why plants are important to us and the role of pollinators. Buzz away playing the pollination game, waggle dance then make wildflower seed bombs and homes for bees. This is a two hour workshop.

Four Seasons - EYFS & KS1

What season is it now? How can we find out? Look for signs in your outdoor space, using colour cards to see the kaleidoscope of colour in the natural environment. Create tree sculptures using natural materials found and play nature based games to match the season. This one hour workshop can either be extended to two hours by adding additional activities or two classes can have the workshop in a half day session.

Habitat Estate Agents - Can be adapted for EYFS, KS1 to KS2

Become an estate agent for a variety of animals, identifying suitable habitats for each animal in your local environment. Discuss habitats and micro habitats. Create animals using natural materials and find them or create a home. Using bug viewers, look closely at any invertebrates found in your space, act out life cycles and play nature based games to enhance learning. This two hour workshop can be adapted to EYFS, KS1 and KS2 by the types of activities on offer, linking to the age of the children and National Curriculum requirements.

Materials Matter

EYFS & KS1

Look at materials all around us and go on a materials hunt outdoors. Discuss why they are suitable for that use. Create homes for the characters of a story such as The Three Little Pigs, or a topic from class. This activity is all about teamwork; communicating with one another on what man-made and natural materials will work best. How can they stay dry, keep out predators and remain warm? Which will survive the storm test? Will the wolf be able to blow your house down? Use the wolf ‘fan’ to find out!

KS1 & KS2

Using data loggers, keep track of the temperature of a cup of hot chocolate or a bowl of porridge. Make decisions on what materials will be the best insulator for the house, build the homes together and then record the temperature. What materials will be the best insulators to keep the hot chocolate or porridge warm?

Plant Investigators

EYFS & KS1

Investigate plants, identify where they are growing and what they look like. Find your leaf buddy and using tree ID sheets, can you find your plant? Create leaf/flower prints (hapezome) to bring patterns and plants to life from your local environment. This one hour workshop can either be extended to two hours by adding additional activities or two classes can have the workshop in a half day session.

KS1 & KS2

Investigate plants in your space, using ID sheets. Use a hand lens to look closely at the different parts of a flower. Explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants including pollination and investigate how many invertebrates visit plants. This is a two hour workshop.

Art & Design | Crafts

In our Land Art workshop, we explore textures, shape, space, patterns and colours to create large outdoor artwork in your school grounds or local green space.

We start with a scavenger hunt, finding natural materials to create a large outdoor piece of art together, using Andy Goldsworthy and James Brunt as our inspiration. We work together as a whole class or in groups and use the open-ended resources to develop and grow ideas until the masterpiece is complete. Through this Land Art workshop, Teach Wild provides students with a memorable and holistic learning experience that combines art, nature, teamwork and critical thinking.

This workshop can be booked for a half day and be tailored to meet the needs of children from EYFS to Y6.

Bushcraft

Teach Wild offers bushcraft workshops where pupils learn about a set of survival skills providing them with a memorable and holistic learning experience. All the activities promote teamwork, leadership and personal development whilst inspiring students to care for the outdoors. The bushcraft workshop can be tailored to meet the needs of children from EYFS to Y6 and what space you have available in your school grounds or local green space (subject to permissions).

The bushcraft activities could include:

• Shelter building - Learning how to construct shelters to protect ourselves from the elements
• Fire lighting - Using a flint and steel to create a fire
• Campfire cooking - Using simple ingredients to cook over the fire
• First aid - Learning basics of first aid
• Tool use - Using tools to create items
• Navigation - Developing skills in reading signs, using a compass and understanding the terrain

Design & Technology

Design and technology can be effectively integrated into outdoor learning experiences, providing students with hands-on opportunities to explore, create and problem-solve in natural environments. This approach not only enhances students' understanding of design and technology but also fosters a deep appreciation for the outdoors and its importance in our lives.

Many children enjoy Design and Technology as they can engage in practical work, making decisions and finding solutions for themselves. By being outside the classroom, you can do everything on a much larger scale.

We have various design and technology workshops available that could include other areas of the national curriculum or a text using in class. The outdoor activities could include building bird houses or designing an area of your outdoor space. Teach Wild provides outdoor enrichment workshops tailored specifically to your group and are designed to develop character, communication, problem-solving and resilience in an outdoor setting.

If you have a group that you’d like to try new and varied activities that may not fit with the national curriculum, then Teach Wild’s outdoor enrichment workshop is what you need! This could also be a workshop for children not attending a school residential or want a meaningful way to use your Pupil Premium money. We can create a bespoke package designed towards the age of the pupils and your specific requirements. Activities could include fire building, cooking over a fire, nature based games, craft activities and tool use, all contributing to improved teamwork, communication and motivation within the group.

Environmental Studies

Forest School

Teach Wild offers forest school sessions which are child-centred and take into account the learners interest which helps promote the holistic development of children. With no set outcome, all children have the ability to be as creative as they wish helping to build confident and independent individuals.

Our forest school leaders come to each session with open ended activities which provide ample opportunities for the children to explore, manage risk and reflect for themselves. Activities could include shelter building, tool use, fire building, rope work, cooking on an open fire, natural art, playing games and much more.

You can book a forest school taster day or a block of at least six weekly sessions for a group of children.

Primary Geography

Outdoor learning is a valuable and engaging approach to teaching geography. It allows students to connect with the natural environment and explore geographical concepts in a hands-on and experiential way.

At Teach Wild, we can offer geography workshops which could cover the following:

Mapping skills - make topographic maps of the school grounds, create treasure maps or even map out the neighbourhood. This helps them understand concepts like scale, direction, and coordinates.

Weather observations - Set up a weather station on the school grounds and have students track weather patterns, temperature, humidity, and precipitation. This hands-on experience will help them understand climatology and meteorology.

Ecosystem studies - Take students to a nearby ecosystem, such as a forest and have them observe and document the flora and fauna. This can lead to discussions about ecosystems, biodiversity and human impact on the environment.

Primary History

Come along with Teach Wild and take history outside the classroom, bringing topics to life such as the Great Fire of London, Romans, Stone Age, Anglo Saxons and Vikings.

Teach Wild’s outdoor learning primary history workshops combines historical education with all the benefits of being in an outdoor environment. We aim to make history come alive and foster a deeper connection to the past through immersive and interactive experiences. These workshops provide a hands-on and interactive approach to learning.

Great Fire of London - KS1 & KS2

Fire Fire! Fire Fire! This half day workshop provides a thrilling way to immerse your students in the topic. Start by getting muddy creating scaled walls from 1666, using wattle and daub techniques. Consider how houses were built in the past and today. Then create paper houses and place them next to Thomas Farriner’s bakery. Explain the fire triangle and the three components needed to ignite and sustain a fire. Set the homes alight. Can we stop the fire before it’s too late? This outdoor workshop is subject to permissions and suitable space.

Romans - KS1 & KS2

The city of Rome is thirsty so we need to transport water to the civilians fast or they won’t survive! Work together to create a human aqueduct using guttering and sticks. Who will be the architects and builders of tomorrow? Teamwork essential to transport as much water as possible. This fun filled outdoor learning workshop has additional activities which could include making clay coil pots, creating nature mosaics and building roman towns using natural materials.

Stone Age - KS1 & KS2

Be Stig or Om for the day and bring the Stone Age topic to life! Use a flint & steel and have a go at making a spark or lighting some tinder, make some cordage (string), create charcoal paint for cave drawings, make Stone Age jewellery or create an axe. Vikings / Anglo Saxons - KS1 & KS2

Teach Wild brings the WOW to any curriculum subject by taking the learning outside of the classroom. Our outdoor learning workshops engages all children as it provides a different and more interactive learning environment, motivating pupils in ways that traditional classroom settings might not always achieve.

Group Sizes Catered For

Up to 30 children in a single workshop. Some workshops last for only one hour so it means that two classes can have a workshop within a half day session. Check the workshop details or our website for more information.

We bring all the materials and resources needed for the outdoor learning workshops.

Pricing Information

Our workshops are charged at £225 for a half day (two hours) or £350 for a full day (2 x two hours).

Some of our outdoor learning workshops last for one hour which means that two classes could attend a half day session or four classes in a full day. Please check the specific workshop you are interested in, visit our website or contact info@teachwild.co.uk to find out more.

Clothing Requirements

Our workshops are outdoors so please make sure children are dressed suitably for the season.

Other Information

Teach Wild provides memorable educational experiences for children in the outdoors, either in your school grounds or in a local green space (subject to permission). As the workshops are outdoors, they also help you realise the potential of your outdoor space whatever the size, addressing possible challenges faced with taking learning outside the classroom and how to overcome them. We are used to delivering sessions in urban jungles with limited space and also schools that are lucky enough to have lots of it!

Any curriculum area can be taken outside the classroom so please get in touch if you would like us to create a bespoke workshop tailored for your school. We also provide Forest School sessions and CPD for your staff to help with outdoor learning.
