The Museum is home to Roald Dahl’s Writing Hut and the author’s complete archive. School sessions draw on these unique resources to engage your pupils in character creation, editing and redrafting and unlocking ideas and inspiration.

The Roald Dahl Museum is the perfect place to see the writing process in action by one of its masters. Pupils will discover how they can use the same techniques themselves and find out more about Roald Dahl’s life while exploring our fun, interactive galleries in one of our facilitated sessions.

What is typically included on our school trips

We run both onsite and online visits.

If you are visiting the Museum, we have a range of exciting sessions for Years 2 to 4 and Years 5 to 8 around themes such as crafting characters, editing/redrafting and unlocking ideas and inspiration. We offer two types of session: galleries-based 90 minute sessions and archive-based 180 minute sessions. Both types are based around a key literacy area which is the focus throughout your visit.

You can combine all our onsite sessions with our free self-led Village Trail. You lead this walk to discover inspiration for Roald Dahl’s stories in the local area.

For online Livestream sessions, you will connect directly to the Museum through a mix of pre-recorded films in and around our galleries, live presentation and facilitated activities using pre-delivered resources for your class to do with us. We run a 45 minute session on Creative Characters for Years 2 to 4 and a 60 minute Creative Characters session for Years 5 to 8.

Group Sizes Catered For

Each onsite session caters for up to 32 pupils. We can accommodate school groups of up to 96 pupils, split across 3 sessions on certain days.

Our online Livestream sessions can accommodate up to 35 pupils per session.

Materials, Resources & Information Provided

We provide all the resources you need for your visit.

If you are visiting the Museum, you will receive a Sparky Schools Information Pack to help you prepare for the day and Golden Tickets to gain free entry to the Museum to carry out your risk assessment ahead of your visit. We’ll also provide you with a copy of the self-led Village Trail and readings if you plan on exploring further (or alternative activities for bad weather days).

For online Livestream sessions, you’ll receive all your learning materials in a downloadable Resource Pack. You’ll also get a downloadable pre and post session Activities Pack and a Roald Dahl FAQs poster. To help the session run smoothly, we’ll organise a 20 minute tech test on a day prior to the session and there will be 10 minutes of set up time, just ahead of the session start time.    

Photography, Filming & Audio Restrictions

We allow school groups to take photos and videos of their sessions but ask that you do not share our resources beyond your classrooms.

Risk Assessment Details

We provide everything teachers need to carry out their own risk assessments, including Health and Safety information and free teacher visits ahead of your onsite sessions.

Pricing Information

Onsite sessions:

Galleries-based 90 minute sessions cost £205 for up to 32 pupils.

Archive-based 180 minute sessions cost £240 for up to 32 pupils.

We offer one free adult place for every 6 pupils that you bring. 1-to-1 support is also free.

Online Livestream sessions:
Year 2 to 4 Creative Characters 45 minute sessions cost £100 for up to 35 pupils.

Year 5 to 8 Creative Characters 60 minute sessions cost £120 for up to 35 pupils.

Clothing Requirements

No specific clothing is required but if you plan on taking pupils on the Village Trail, sensible footwear and waterproofs are recommended in case of bad weather.

First Aid Information

All schools must have a trained first aider with their group and are responsible for providing first aid in the event of an incident onsite. However, there is always at least one trained first aid-trained staff member onsite during school sessions.

Available Facilities

For onsite visits, you will have a dedicated lunch area and an area to leave coats and bags during the day. The Museum also has toilets and a shop. The shop is only open on Thursdays and Fridays, but Goody Bags are available for all groups to order in advance, if you wish to purchase a memento of the day for your pupils.

Accessibility & Disabled Facilities

The Museum has accessible toilets and is accessible for wheelchair users.

The main galleries are on the ground floor and there is a lift to our upstairs lunchroom and workshop area. The archive-based 180 minute session is based in our upstairs workshop space. The galleries-based 90 minute session is based in the ground floor spaces.

We can provide a visual story for schools to help with planning your visit.

We work with individual schools to adapt facilities, sessions and resources where possible to cater for the specific needs your group – for example turning down sound on interactives, providing large print resources or making a quiet space available. We can occasionally offer visits outside of these days so please get in touch to see if we can accommodate you.
